This is Not a Game

A genuine Russian battle tank (T55) and 5 real size soldiers, played by two great hands like a string puppet show, aim to highlight how easy is for the heads of state to get involved in wars, from their comfortable offices, as if it were a child’s play.

Quinn has moored his committed piece on the island of San Servolo (Venice), on the occasion of the celebration of the 54th Venice Biennale. The artist’s provocative piece is hanging on a platform over the sea, with a total weight of over 40 tons. This work is complemented with the installation of a bombarded brick wall with the message “This is Not a Game”, which can be admired at the Italian Pavilion.

Cristian Maretti, the installation commissioner, explains that “this piece ask us not to forget the suffering of the past, and to think of the future ” and guarantees that it causes “a lump in the throat of all those who surrender, persist, watch and feel”.

With such a forceful, thought-provoking and easily to assimilate message, Lorenzo Quinn wishes to show us the parallels between something as innocent as a child playing strategy games and the innocence and ease with which, in real life, some people can use the same “privileges”, with irreparable damage. Fun and extermination shouldn’t go together.

The artist has specialized in socially committed works, like he did earlier with “Stadistics” or “Home, Sweet Home”. A piece that will surely start people talking and pondering.

“As I was observing my son playing on the terrace with some toy plastic soldiers and a plastic tank, I realized that children try to emulate what they see in everyday life and that unfortunately the image of tanks and soldiers dominating the airwaves is all too common. War has become frightenly familiar and almost unshocking, for those who are not involved and get to see it from the comfort of their living room.
Leaders of the world use their armies as if they were some private little toy they can commandere and destroy as a careless kid would. But this is not play, these are real people and real weapons and the outcome is anything but a Game.”

Lorenzo Quinn
